As I saw it

Honu have been learning about how one story can have many different perspectives or points of view.  Thanks to school kits we have been exploring the stories told by 8 people on shore and 8 people at sea from 1769 when the Endeavour arrived at Te Whanganui-a-hei.   The tamariki showed fabulous respect and responsibility for this serious and sensitive topic which is based on Aotearoa's history.

Plotting a timeline of events, many characters had stories that overlapped.

The learners used their reading skills to comprehend and visualise the story told on the back of each card.  First we had to use the clues to make plot the events in order of time, then we used the clues in the text to infer who did what and why!  The tamariki were so hooked on using the different stories to connect the clues together and problem solve the significance of each person's object.  We also played a version of Guess who with the characters from the story.

Lastly the tamariki have begun their tuhituhi to describe the story of that day from the point of view of their character's object.  This writing will also include facts about the object (materials, circa, where it was at the beginning and end of the day, who it belonged to and it's significance to the story) and will be used in our exhibition of objects as if in a Museum.

Once the mini exhibition is set up, we may invite you in to check it out :).
