Mauri mahi, mauri ora - do the mahi get the treats!

Mauri mahi, mauri ora - do the mahi get the treats!

In Honu this saying is on our door, and for good reason...it comes true!  All of the tamariki in Honu have worked hard in our class garden, school orchard and at the native planting at Hamanatua Awa during Term 2.  This did not go unnoticed by the WBS Enviro School team.

During assembly on Friday Koka Jodie announced that she was going to present the Enviro school award, a carved waka taonga and she then began to describe all the amazing action that "a class" has been doing in our garden, orchard and native tree planting area.  When she mentioned that this class had also responded to the problem of the drought by learning about, making and installing Olla into the vegetable garden the tamariki of Honu perked up, they knew they were in the spotlight!

Sure enough we had earned the stunning taonga, ka pai to mahi Honu!   Proudly, we have displayed it in our ruma with a special passenger, the Tumeke Tiki!  The tamariki declared it a double-whammy, being noticed for all their Enviroschool action and also for promoting our kiwaha o te wiki.

Another saying in Honu is, amazing things happen when you try!  Due to their efforts at school, Honu were also lucky enough to be selected to visit Mangaone Station to weed and mulch the wetland planting there.

I can't wait to see what other action they decide to take at school and in the community these coming months.  We are going to encourage the tamariki to take action as change agents, where they think of environmental issues that they could create a solution for and ACT on it.  This could be at school or in the community.  You could support this by talking about environmental issues at home.
